US Travels for December 19, 2011

US Travels

It was the Red-eye out of Honolulu to Chicago for the first leg then a
short flight to St Louis, Missouri. Waiting there where the friendly
folks that had stored the Goat mobile on their gentleman farm over the
past 3 months. Leaving the airport we have the husband driving with 2
women, major babbling brooks here, husband misses the turnoff, so we
do a quick tour of St Louis before heading in the right direction.

Down the road it is where women number 2 has parked her truck the night before.
Arriving we find the truck missing but what we do find is 10 signs
telling us that any vehicle left in this particular lot will be towed,
$80.00 later she is a happy camper.

At the farm of sorts the Goatmobile is readied for the trip north the
next day to pickup a new camper in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Before leaving
I have No. 1 wife asking me if I am superstitious in any way or form
and this questioning goes on for the next 10 minutes without a clue as
to what she is talking about.

WELL it seems that the black cat, which I had asked about earlier, had
crawled up inside the engine to sleep. Husband had gone out and
started up the truck, the next thing he heard was a loud thump, then
smaller thumps. Shutting off the truck he opens the hood and we find
the black cat well wrapped around the fan belt, dead of course.
Needless to say it was not a very pleasant job pulling the bits and
pieces out of the fan. How the cat could even stay there under the
hood when I had placed containers of mothballs all through the engine
block is beyond me.

Away at 0230hrs the next morning for a 5 hour drive north to pickup
the camper it was. Of course 3 hours into the drive we have a flat
tyre but fortunately for me it was right after getting gas and I had
moved the truck forward to the convenient store for a proper cuppa of
mom's favorite coffee. Later on I called the wife of the gentleman
farmer and the first words out her mouth was, "it's the black cat
curse"………..

Well the new camper is on the back of the truck, its comes with
everything imaginable and more. It even has a toilet and shower in the
same stall.
To me this space will not be used at all so we find me dirty clothes
bag, paper towels, cans of food and 10 boxes of red wine, and a very
much more functional use of critical space.

Eskimo Village.....enjoy

Eskimo Village in Alaska

You may need to watch this one twice in order to take in everything, the people themselves and their environment! Enjoy!!!!

Done like you've never seen before. This video from the small Yupiq Eskimo Village of Quinhagak, Alaska , was a school computer project intended for the other Yupiq villages in the area. Much to the villagers' shock, over a half million people have viewed it.

Remembrance - Sent unashamedly without Apology.

Subject: Remembrance - Sent unashamedly without Apology.

A version of this has been around before but always worthwhile to remember
comrades in arms.

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

'Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you ?
Have you always turned the other cheek ?
To My Church have you been true?'

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
'No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

'Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell.'

retired husbands

I love this one

RETIRED HUSBAND

After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to K-Mart
Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women - she loves to browse.

Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from our local K-Mart:

Dear Mrs Harris,

Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr Harris, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras:

1. June 15: He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking.

2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.

3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom.

4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, 'Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away'. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money.

5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway.

6. August 14: Moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area.

7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged.

8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, 'Why can't you people just leave me alone?' EMTs were called.

9.. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.

10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were.

11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the ' Mission Impossible' theme.

12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his 'Madonna look' by using different sizes of funnels.

13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled 'PICK ME! PICK ME!'

14. October 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed 'OH NO! IT'S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!'

And last, but not least:

15. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, then yelled very loudly, 'Hey! There's no toilet paper in here.' One of the clerks passed out.

If you don't send this to your dearest friends, you will be depriving them of some good humor.

US/Canada Travels for 2011 Statistics.........or lies

US/Canada Travels for 2011 Statistics

Some of these stats might come as a surprise to many but believe me
it's the truth as well as the Greynomad recollects………..maybe.

Goatmobile: 2011 Toyota Tacoma 4WD with a long bed. What this really
means is that Toyota added another 6" inches to the length of the
truck bed……. Anything to generate another dollar.

Mileage: 25,000
Tyres: Replaced the originals at the 15,000 mark with Goodyear's

Windows: Had to replace the back window after the bloody camper shell
managed to poke a hole in it as I made a very sharp turn for the McDonalds
Senior discounted coffee.

Modifications: A tree managed to dent the passenger door as I was
Driving down a narrow nasty dirt road meant for small ATV's.

Pop-up Camper Shell that managed to have enough holes in it to allow
the arrival of mosquitoes, biting black flies, No see ums and any
other
Insect that had a taste for blood. Though the camper was a bit rough at times
anything beats sleeping in the Honda Element or a 2 man tent while on the
road.

Food: California Dates, Cliff Bars (organic power bar), Hummus, box wine,
unsalted shell peanuts, crackers, cream cheese, milk, cereal, baked
beans (large can) and you wonder why I had gas and heart
burn……………….and of course gallons and gallons of Aloha Tea (name
brand).

Medical: Except for the vast volume of gas which turned the clear
plastic windows in the camper black and the spider bites in Missouri
that gave me
horrible rash on my inner thigh, life was good. Of course the life saving
container of the whole trip was me liter pee bottle at the top of the
list for items of connivence especially late at night. For those who
were blessed by my presents you just might have wondered why a
specific area around the camper had a very green look to it. WELL
think of these areas as blessed by a liquid fertilizer not found on
the open market…………..

Navigation: Garmin GPS for the vehicle and a hand held Garmin 450T for
the Geocaches. The software for the vehicle GPS must have been written
by the village idiot but you learn to very quickly to question the
directions as given.
Stayed off the freeways or main roads and would try if possible never
to go through a major city. Just the thought of traffic, noise, and
people had me go miles out of my way to void Joe Redneck and his 12
dogs.

Where: Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington,
Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, North
Dakota,
Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Virginia,
Maryland, West Virginia, Illinois, and Missouri, are we there
yet………….! where the Goatmobile is under the care of Mrs. Green, the
carbon footprint Toyota Prius nut case.

RV Sites: On the cheap especially in Canada when I could find a dirt
road or a truck lay-by. In the states it was the National Forest,
Military Bases, Army Corp of Engineers Recreational sites. Lets not
forget all of those good people who put up with me at their abodes of
4 walls with a blue tarp and the outhouse with a library of ads from
the local nunnery…

Right now I am in the process of flogging as much of my Hawaii house
gear as possible thinking that I will be doing this traveling bit full
time while renting out my townhouse with its 15,000 square feet under
the roof for $2.50 per month.
The reason the rent is so cheap is the goats, sheep, and beef cattle
that live under the townhouse for which I collect the dropping for
fuel during the cold Hawaiian winter months.

Other then that good friends I must say aloha and mahalo for staying
with me these last 10 months. Next year looks to be as good if not
better.

US/Canada Travels for 24 September 2011

US/Canada Travels for 24 September 2011

Kentucky Illinois Missouri Texas Hawaii

The family that I stayed with while volunteering for the Padre Island
National Seashore, Corpus Christi, Texas, the dad has a farm in the
Good Old Boy country just north of Elizabethtown, Kentucky. So for the
next few days it was Geocaching, no showers, pit bulls, and bloody
mules braying all night long.

Finally made a break for it and headed for Land Between the Lakes in
southwest Kentucky. Unfortunately I was only able to spend a night
there as getting into Missouri was a priority where the Goatmobile
will be stored for the next 2-3 months before I am back in mid
December.

The Goatmobile now resides in with friends I met through my travels in
the Pacific working for Fish and Wildlife Service. The wife of sorts
consider herself the ultimate Green Machine growing chicks from the
shell to eating size while spreading chicken scat throughout her
neighbors back yard and the counties drinking water system. She in her
own little way has increased the number of Green Toyota Prius on the
road by selling her previous one then buying another. Of course the
only sane one is the husband who has managed to secure a job with The
Nature Conservancy as a consultant traveling to Berlin, Beijing, and
Japan pushing plastic water bottles from Wal-Mart.

Flying from St. Louis, Missouri to Corpus Christi, Texas was next
where for the next few days it was laying in the sun, checking on my
volunteer position for next year and drinking cheap wine, very cheap
wine…… My bag did not make the trip with me and it wasn't for another
12 hrs that the bloody airline found it. One airline one bag……………..!

The time had come that I had to head home to sunny Hawaii looking at
12 hrs flying time. Some how in my thinking that the airlines still
offered free meals and movies for flights over 3 hours. Was I ever
mistaken and of course the seats have moved closer and smaller for the
enjoyment of all.

As I sit now in Hawaii surrounded by naked dancing hula dancers,
drinking Mai tai's by the pitcher full, palm trees swaying in the
distance and the cool ocean breeze
blowing off the ocean……..I would rather be in North Dakota fighting
the Black flies, stale beer, a ten days of no showers and me last box
of wine then the easy life.

I end this trip with new friends, routes taken, Geocaching numbers
up, and the anticipation of next year's travels.

Aloha and mahalo for this year, keep the rubber down…………..

Adult truths...these are far and away too true and funny to boot

Adult truths:

01. Sometimes I'll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still not know what time it is.
02. Nothing stinks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.
03. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.
04. There is great need for a sarcasm font.
05. How the heck are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?
06. Was learning cursive really necessary?
07. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on # 5. I'm pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.
08. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.
09. I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind of tired.
10. Bad decisions make good stories.
11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren't going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.
12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don't want to have to restart my collection ...again.
13. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page technical report that I swear I did not make any changes to.
14. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.
15. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.
16. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lite than Kay.
17. I wish Google Maps and GPS systems had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.
18. I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.
19. How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear or understand a word they said?
20. I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters!
21. Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever.
22. Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I'd bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time.

23. The first testicular guard, the "Cup," was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important.
Ladies......Quit Laughing.

US/Canada Travels for 15 September 2011

US/Canada Travels for 15 September 2011

Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky

It is Muncy, Pennsylvania, spending time at the Tewksbury Organic Farm
for a week or so. Right off I have a list of projects that would keep
me busy for months but thankfully the Senior Citizens labor Laws kept
me to only 150 hrs of work per week. Thinking that my travels
Geocaching would have kept me in decent shape for farm work proved a
bit of wistful thinking. The first few days there oxygen was in short
supply or energy in this body of mine to even think of the next day
events.

Thankfully they have a handicap free spirit tattooed flower child who
shows up with her wheel chair every Thursday, motorized of course with
racing slicks on the back, to handle the small jobs of picking the
maggots out of the tomatoe patch. Anything motorized is not allowed on
the farm, matter of fact the only thing that is allowed on wheels is a
wheel barrel; even then it had to be blessed by organic bunny of
nonsense.

I arrived in the sunshine and leave in the rain. Matter of fact I was
out the door on 6 September and the rain is forecasted to last another
4-5 days regardless how far south you travel. Traveled south to the
sunny (rainy) town of Confluence, Pennsylvania for 4-5 days of
Geocaching but the forecast for the next week was rain and more rain.
Found a small Navy base with a RV sight in Sugar Grove, West Virginia,
now getting to Sugar Grove via GPS had me down roads that had not seen
a motor vehicle in the last `100 years…………..Sugar Grove it was for the
next 4 days in the George Washington National Forest Geocaching,
getting lost without cell phone service and still had fun.

Leaving Sugar Grove and heading west to the Daniel Boone National
Forest in Kentucky is not a straight line affair for those who think
that the great road system in the US has a path waiting for the weary
traveler. Well then they haven't traveled though West Virginia, we
first travel south 75 miles on Virginia 220 then
Route 64 west is waiting for us. We then look at Rt 64 and decide that
why are we traveling south when Rt 60 provides a straight line of
approach. What we find out on Rt 60 is small towns, every bloody
biker in West Virginia and speed limits of 25 mph and not one straight
road to be had and a Harley – Davidson Motorcycle dealer in the middle
of nowhere until you realize that every biker on Rt 60 is a Hog
rider.

Finally we find Daniel Boone National Forest and a site for the next 5
days. The vehicle GPS is on the blink so its Google Maps that provide
the guiding light. Did you know that the fine state of Kentucky will
not sell booze on Sunday's as we are in the middle of the bible belt .
Here is a state that is as crooked as any other in the south and the
bloody twits will not sell me a cheap box of the finest wine out of
eastern Africa made out of kuku berries.

Morehead, Kentucky is the nearest big town and Wal-Mart for sure. The
gates to the National Forest close as of 1 October and will reopen
next year in March where the temp's might be just a bit cool. What
makes traveling early spring and late fall is the absence of kids and
the noise factor of plus 100.

I am out of Daniel Boone National Forest the 15th of September and
keep motoring west, west to another spot where friends gather, drink
fine Kentucky Bourbon and cheat at the cards.

May you all be blessed with a good case of crabs, run out of your case
of Depends diapers and just enjoy life with heartburn………..

Aloha,

US/Canada Travels for 1 September 2011

US/Canada Travels for 1 September 2011

Ohio – West Virginia (blink) – Pennsylvania

Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Fairborn, Ohio. It was near here that
the Wright Brothers made their famous flight, sponsored by Kentucky
Fried Chicken no less.

So for 7 days I stayed here Geocaching on all points of the compass.
Recovery rate was not the best as the bulk of caches centered on the
numerous steel bridges that date the growth of the farming community.
You only have to bump your head just so many times crawling under
these relics that a proper case of the backside develops trying to
find a small magnet black key box with log. All manners of small
biting, crawling, and blood sucking insects are waiting for you in the
best of form.

The best one for this time period was sticking my hand into a hole,
which was a nest for ground wasps. Nasty indivisibles with an
attitude. I don't know how many times my hand took a hit but I was
moving at an accelerated rate far beyond the speed of my swearing. Of
course the initial shock is the discomfort, for a better term, then
the swelling to the size of a baseball glove. Of course the worse part
besides swelling which lasted 3-4 days was the itching of the hand
over the same period. This itching was cured by an old Aussie remedy
from the turn of the century where you had to soak the hand in a
bucket of chilled beer for a minimum of 3-4 hours a day. This of
course had to be done at night while watching the telly and
replenishing the beer as it got warm. This remedy has been validated
from all of my mates in the southern latitudes and you can go to
www.beer_cure.com for more good info.

Out of the Air Force Base and head southeast to the Ohio River then
follow Route 7 north through the Wayne National Forest. Just above
Wade, Ohio we find the first, in my case, a National Forest campsite
that not only has electrical hookups for RV's but hot showers. This
particular campsite sits right on the Ohio River and right across from
the site sits Bygone West Virginia, which of course is still in the
19th century as far as kerosene lamps and horse and mule wagons for
transportation.

If thou has never driven up the Ohio Valley on Route 7 then you have
never lived. When I say that COAL is king you best believe it. I saw 4
huge power plants and all depended on coal for fuel. The Ohio Valley
takes you into the 19 hundreds with the houses and streets as they
were then. Majestic, beautiful, dirty, it's all there, and I wish that
I could of spent the time walking through the region photographing the
landscape what a story it would tell.

Finally crossed into Pennsylvania and headed north into the Allegheny
National Forest where I will be staying at an Army Corp of Engineering
Recreational site with all of the bells and whistles for $14.00 per
night. The showers are a right pain, this is where you have to
continually push a small button to keep a constant flow of water and
of course the hot water temp is right above freezing, but no worries
as I am looking at 10 days of no showers for this period of time.
There are areas in the Allegheny forest that you definitely don't want
to be caught in. Some of red necks are still contesting the out come
of the civil war and the confederate flags attest to that. It is the
land of," The Good Old Boys" and some one with a Boston accent would
best moving on. For Geocaching it has to be some of the most enjoyable
for terrain wise. Did a lot of humping getting to some of the remote
caches, of course this only led to off setting the loss fluids through
sweat by drinking greater quantities of red wine which led to
heartburn, etc………….

We continue east to Muncy, Pennsylvania right behind Hurricane Irene
that just passed through the eastern seaboard. Some wind damage in
Muncy but nothing compared to Vermont and New York. Weather wise for
Muncy and the surrounding area looks good while here at the organic
farm of little people. The day starts early and only when the sun sets
does work end. The farm is a great feeder though and the body has made
quite an adjustment from Power Bars, box wine and hummus to food that
actually benefits the body.

September will find ourselves moving south into Kentucky and Missouri
for our finally leg of this journey.

Stay safe out there, chew your food properly, don't pass gas in
public, and last of all conserve water by taking only one shower a
month regardless of your neighbor's complaints.

Aloha,

The Greynomad

Wisdom

Amen and Amen!  What about the word RESPONSIBILITY does the government not understand?

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.
